Perfect for gamifying class time!
If you read my latest post about How to Fill an Hour of Sunday School Time, you’ll see that one of the easiest ways to fill class time as well as solidify content in your students’ minds is through games! After all, who doesn’t love a little break to play a game?!
One of my favorite memory verse games is a memory verse puzzle! This is a simple, easy way to get students involved in memorizing a verse, passage, or poem while having fun at the same time!
To play, here is the list of supplies you’ll need:
- One of the Memory Verse Puzzle Templates from below.
- Printer + Copy Paper
- Scissors
- Something to write with
Now, here’s what to do:
- Once you’ve chosen your favorite puzzle template, print it out on blank copy paper, and grab those scissors!
- Cut along all of the bold puzzle lines, so that you end up with individual puzzle pieces. (If you’re printing from one of my templates, you will have 12 pieces.)
- Next, write one to three words per puzzle piece of whatever verse, passage, or poem your class is working on memorizing. Or, select from one of my pre-made puzzle printables with verses already on them!
- Then, mix all of the pieces up on a table, desk, or even the floor!
- Finally, your kiddos can begin puzzling, trying to put the pieces back to make the passage make sense. Once they’ve finished, choose a volunteer to read the entire puzzle out loud!
Some other variations of the game are:
- Divide the classroom into teams of groups or individuals, and cut out a puzzle for each team (just print out multiple copies of the same puzzle). Then, it’s a race to see which team (individuals) can put together the puzzle first!
- Have each child race the clock to see how long it takes for them to put together the puzzle and read the verse! They can try to beat their own times or someone else’s. Maybe, they could even beat the teacher’s time 🙂
- Print out a blank template, and write out a story on the pieces. Once the class has put together the puzzle, they get to read a new story!
You can download this blank template of the game here!
And, here is another puzzle template already filled out with John 3:16!

Hope you enjoy this fun game with your class! Be sure to comment and share how this game worked for you and your students.
