Memory Reinforcement Tool: Floating Clouds

Easy method for memorizing anything in no time at all!

For all the Sunday school teachers, homeschool parents, and even classroom teachers out there, here is a great way to help reinforce memorization!

This simple method of helping kids learn Bible verses, songs, poems, or passages, is something I have been doing since I was little kid! It combines repetition along with visual, auditory, and tangible learning to create a perfect way for students of all ages to quickly memorize anything. And, best of all, you can use cheap materials that you probably already have sitting on your desk or (if you’re anything like me) hiding in your junk drawer haha! 😊

  • The first thing to do is print off my “Floating Clouds” printable here. (Stay on the look out for more versions of this learning tool coming soon!)
  • Next, cut out as many of your floating clouds as you need and write in a word or two of the passage/song/Bible verse/poem etc. that you are working on memorizing. I like to write in big, block letters, and use bright crayons or markers with bold, visible colors that can be seen easily from a few feet away. (Disclaimer: This definitely works best for smaller passages as students learn it word-by-word, but you can use this with longer passages if you break them up into phrases.)
  • You can then choose either sticky tack, double-sided tape, magnets, or thumb tacks to pin your clouds up (in order) to your chosen surface that is easily seen by all participants: a poster, pin board, whiteboard, wall, or even the fridge at home work great!
  • To start, have your students read and say the words they see on the clouds twice through (or more depending on the difficulty level of the passage).
  • Next, take away one of the clouds, and set it aside. Have the students read through the passage once again, including the word they no longer see (tell them to imagine it is still there).
  • For the next round, take off another cloud, and have the students repeat again, still including the words or phrases they no longer see. Continue doing this either in order or in random order until there are no more clouds left “floating”!

You and your students should now be able to say the passage completely without the help of reading the words! It’s that simple!
