Theme: You Will Reap What You Sow
Let’s take a deep dive into the first of 10 lessons in our newest autumn-themed lesson series: Little Leaves of Faith! The hard part of lesson planning is done for you: just click, download, and print! Read a little bit more about the series here.
To start off the series, your kiddos will be invited to think about the seasons of the year and focus in on what happens to plants through spring, summer, and fall. Consider bringing in some seeds or plants to further engrain the principle that whatever type of seed goes into the ground, that’s the type of plant that will grow out of it.
You can download all the lesson materials HERE.
Bringing in a few different types of seeds and corresponding plants as well as some other types of fruits can create a fun object lesson for children as young as toddlers and as old as teenagers!
Object Lesson
What You’ll Need:
- 3-5 different types of seeds
- 1-2 mature plants that corresponds with one of the seeds
- 1-5 plant or fruit that is completely opposite of any seeds you have (Using fruit that the children are familiar with will create the most effective illustration)
What You’ll Do:
Hold up a [sunflower] seed and name it. Allow children to look, touch, and recognize it, too. Ask, “Now, if I plant this, what will grow?” A [sunflower]! Yes! Hold up another seed and ask the same question. If you have a seed that corresponds with an adult plant, that would be awesome!
Next, show another seed, and ask, “If I plant this [sunflower] seed, could I ever grow an [orange]?” hold up the fruit.
The same thing is true of us: if we constantly “plant” lies, cheating, stealing, anger, fighting, etc. in our hearts, then that is what will come out of us and surround us. If we “plant” good things in our hearts, though, like love, patience, kindness, faith, generosity, self-lessness etc., then those will come out of us and surround us, too! The more good things you plant, the more good things you will harvest in your life!
*Note for older kids: You could challenge them by asking, “How do we “plant” good or bad things in our lives?” Here are a few examples: Acting that way, listening to people or music that encourages those characteristics, watching videos that model those behaviors, reading our Bibles, etc. Add your own examples and open up the discussion as needed/as time allows. The more questions you ask and the more responsibility you put on your students to critically think through a concept, the more effective it will become!
Once you’ve finished your object lesson, you can return to the lesson guide and finish teaching the principle that the more good things you plant in your heart (such as kindness, goodness, faith, etc.), the more good things you will reap in your life and from those around you.
Then, there is a memory verse available for you and your students to read and recite as you practice the principle of reaping and sowing that you just learned!

I have also provided a coloring page for your younger students to take home or use class time to color!
This 9.5′ x 11′ poster is also available to print, for you as the teacher to either use as another visual aid or classroom poster or to hand out to your students to take home, as they work on their memory verse and remember the main principle they learned!
